Task 4.4

Monitoring mechanisms

This task will deal with monitoring mechanisms necessary to assure system survivability, which properly accounts for fault detection, diagnosis and reconfiguration.

It is intended to pursue an evidence-accruing approach, applied by a fault tolerance manager to choose and carry out one of multiple fault recovery strategies, depending upon the perceived severity of the fault. An evaluation subsystem to provide quantitative comparison among several possible reconfiguration strategies will be also included in such dependability architecture.

Moreover, research will be performed on extending the system monitoring mechanisms with sophisticated features that go beyond mere intrusion detection but instead achieve what might be called trustworthiness monitoring, where the general level of resilience of the system is assessed during its operation, both from the perspective of attacks, vulnerabilities, and general faults.
